Event #1: JONATHAN MOORE - IS IT JUST ME, OR HAVE WE NOT MOVED?

Today, April 25th I attended Jonathan Moore's solo exhibition called "Is it just me, or have we not moved?" The exhibition was held in a room with a security guard that checked bruincards before we entered the door sensor. The front door security guard scrutinized each and every one that walked in with uncertainty.
After passing through the first security guard, we were forced to put down our belongings to have our body checked with the hand sensor. Next, our belongings went through a check and the guard gave off a rude impression. He questioned with a forceful voice and asked about anything that was suspicious. Then, we were stuffed into a tiny, pitch black space with 5 other people. Lastly, a security guard would conduct a survey of questions such as "Were the staff courteous?", "How was your experience?", and "Would you come back?" The main point of this survey however was that even if we answered "no" to any of the questions, she put words in our mouth with a "yes". The girl that was in front of me answered "no" and the guard totally disregarded her answer by giving her a look and told her to complain under her breath after walking away.

The overall focus of this exhibition was clear. They wanted to illustrate how the people had no choice under the control of these security guards. The security guards would purposely give off a rude, hostile vibe to frighten or exert power over the people. The main purpose of the exhibition seemed to portray how authority figures in certain settings completely take over people's basic rights and force certain behaviors upon the people.

I personally feel that this exhibition touched upon our first unit of the "two cultures". It linked how a form of art was mixed with a current issue that is still dealt today through an exhibition. Instead of making a lecture or a basic article about inequality within airport security, they created a room that allowed people to experience it first hand. For me, it was a good example of how creative I can be even with my midterm project. I literally loved this exhibition and would recommend anyone to attend if they have the chance.
