Unit 8: Nanotechnology + Art

Personally, this topic of nanotech + art was mind blowing in that I had no idea nanotech can do anything with art. According to lecture video part 3, a part of nanotechnology are nanoparticles which are a leading part of the market today. They are extremely tiny particles with diameters anywhere from 1 to 100 nanometers and thought to be "new". However, they have been around since 400 B.C. and an example of their existence is a cup in a British museum. The "Lycurgus" cup appears green during the daylight but once viewed from the inside, the color turns red.

These color changes within the pottery were not from chemical disfigurations but actually a proof of nanotechnology, or more specifically nanoparticles. The size and type of nanoparticles can create a wide variation of color on stained glass like in the pottery during this time period.

Besides the use of nanotechnology through stained glass, pottery, and cups during the ancient times, people also used nanostructures in biomimicry as well. Scientists have tried to replicate gecko feet structures with reusable tape so that these creatures are able to stick to the walls better.

Nanotechnology or nanoparticles are topics that I don't know that well, and to be honest it never interested me. However, through this week, I learned how nanotechnology can be adjusted so that creatures can enhance their abilities or even create fascinating color variations for the human eye to see. Through this odd combination of nanotech and art, I was able to understand how art with nanostructures/nanoparticles can change the outlook of anything from pottery to even geckos.
