Unit 9: Space + Art

I personally found this week's lecture to be the most fun to study and made a nice closure to our 10 week long lectures of different topic integrations with art. There are many achievements in astronomy that are results from careful usage of technology, art, and even a bit of imagination.
Even in society today, many famous movies that we have watched or watch consists of the concept of space and the world outside of this Earth. This allows artists and scientists to use their imagination to create artworks or inventions that may or may not be accurate.

The novel, Fountains of Paradise introduced an innovation of a space elevator with the use of the orbital tower that rises from the ground and links satellites in the geostationary orbit at about 36,000 kilometers. This would allow them to save a lot more money whereas rockets are more costly to use. Inspired by this idea, David Smith from NASA organized plans for this elevator which would be an astounding change of a science fiction into reality. I think this is a great example of how the innovations of space can be started with a simple idea backed up by drawings and tiny bit of imagination.

Another interesting art piece that uses the idea of space, art, and imagination is a German artist names Thom Kubli who creates a commission called Float. The creation allows viewers to experience first-hand how it feels to be in a flotation tank. This installation was inspired by John Lilly's invention which was a similar experience where he created a tub that allows a person to sit themselves in a salt water at body temperature in complete darkness (Forde). Similar to the experience of the Dead Sea, the person would feel more buoyant as they are sitting in salt water for awhile.
A cosmic artist Arthur Woods even states how his interest in space and physics influenced his art. He made an interesting claim about how gravity gives an "up and down" orientation to the environment that we live in and therefore, paintings with a rectangular shape have a "natural" top and bottom orientation as well (Woods).
